Gimpy asked:

I had my second knee surgery almost 8 weeks ago. Today was the first time I have tried to play golf since September 15th because of pain and recovery. My issue is I can’t remember how to swing the club anymore. I know what to do in my mind, but my body just isn’t working the way I am thinking it should. I am most frustrated because after my ACL surgery the first time I picked a club up and played I shot a 76. What can I do to get back to my old form?

Golf Swing Instructions

Filed Under golf swing | Comments Off

Chris Simpson asked:

All the golf beginners are eager to learn and apply the golf swing instructions they find out during special classes, from magazines or the Internet. You may have watched professional players and wondered about the golf swing instructions that lie behind their training. We should begin by saying that most people who start learning golf often share the wrong impression that the arms are fundamental in this game. To a certain extent they are right, but as you are to find out, golf swing instructions require that the body and the arms create the move together.

If you’ve seen some “professional” player hit the ball by a very quick move of the arms, that will not be the person to take as a model. Golf swing instructions are clear about the coordination of feet, legs, trunk and finally, shoulder movement. This is the correct and only order to practice your swing. The first part of the golf swing instructions should mention that if you move the body slowly, you will actually hit the ball better, and it will go a lot farther. If you just slow down, you can better control the club centre, send the ball faster with less effort. This is a golf swing instruction worth remembering.

These golf swing instructions show you how to begin practice. Keep the club at waist height and let the body be the one to swing the club head. See how that feels! If you move your body weight from one leg to the other, the club will swing faster. This golf swing instruction should make you understand the speed principle of a basic golf move. Then, don’t simply think you’re going to hit the ball, since this will cause the arms to move faster. The golf swing instruction here is to shift the body weight and thus imprint force to the move.

It takes time and practice to actually follow the golf swing instructions your trainer may show you; remember this is a sport, so, training is everything. If you make an effort just to understand the logical principle of the golf swing instructions, you’ll be one step closer to more powerful, yet effortless moves. You may find it useful to have a look at a professional site such as Ultimate Golf Tips providing even more insight. Even if you choose to go on learning other golf tricks besides the swing ones, don’t forget that the latter are basic, you’ll always need them to do the rest.

Jonathan Barrett asked:

An excerpt from the book Golf Swing Eureka by Jon Barrett - www.golfswingeureka.com

I’ve inserted this section in as I believe it may help you understand why we find the golf swing so hard.

Why do we find a move that seems so easy to the professionals so incredibly difficult to perform?

Recently I discovered that psychologists believe that we learn differently as adults than we do when we were children. And I believe this may be the key to explaining why we have such a difficult time of it.

The large majority of professional golfers will have taken up golf when they were kids - Tiger Woods was swinging a club well at 3!

But, I would imagine the majority of amateur golfers took golf up when either in their late teens, early twenties or even later in life - as adults.

The psychologists believe that as children we learn from repeating the model that we see - we know that kids are very trusting of what they are told. Yes, they ask lots of questions but they trust the answers given. They see, and are told, and DO.

Now as adults we learn differently. We have already formed opinions about how the world is and how things operate. So when we learn something new we actually test it against the rules that we have already built up in our heads as to what is right and wrong.

Unfortunately for us, the golf swing is actually illogical. That’s where the problem stems from. In our heads we can’t actually accept or believe that that is how the golf swing works. We then trust our instinct and test it against our rules and go back to what we believe is logical.

Here is what is illogical about the golf swing:

A Golf Swing without Effort = A Powerful 300 yard drive

It’s been said before that the secret to the pros swing is that it achieves ‘Power WITHOUT Effort - how illogical is that!

It’s a bit like saying we’re going on a 200 mile car journey, but we’re not going to turn the engine on! No ones going to believe you.

That’s how our brains interpret it - we think there’s no way you can hit a golf ball 300 yards without LOTS of effort.

So next time we coil up on the backswing our brain tells our muscles ‘right guys we need plenty of effort if we’re going to send this ball long and straight’.

Pro’s do actually put effort into their swings to get the ball to go that far (look at Tiger Woods face just before impact and you’ll see what I mean) BUT they put it in at a completely different point in the swing to amateur golfers. They also know the technique that allows them to produce such great results - and it doesn’t involve power, certainly not how the amateur golfer understands it.

Amateur golfers think you need to start the golf swing powerfully BUT the pro golfers know that you put the effort in at the bottom of the swing.

If you try and take this point on board this will start the process of adjusting your mind.

Over the next few pages I’m going to OPEN your EYES to how the golf swing actually works - much of which us amateurs don’t appreciate.

Understanding is the 1st key to unlocking your golfing potential.

Towards the end of my book I’ll show you where to get a piece of software that will by-pass your conscious mind and reprogram your sub-conscious mind to believe what you will see and start to understand about how the pro golf swing works. How YOU can swing powerfully without effort.

EYE-OPENER No. 2

What part of the body contributes the most

to generating the maximum speed of the club head?

This single answer allowed me to make a huge leap in my understanding of the golf swing, and in everything I had seen and read about the golf swing none of it emphasised it enough.

I carried out a survey on the Internet over several weeks and asked visitors to my web site the question:- What part of the body contributes the most to generating the maximum speed of the club head?

Only 20% got the answer correct - That’s only 1 in every 5 golfers! And these golfers had a wide range of handicaps down to single figures.

Interestingly this figure corresponds to another golfing statistic - Did you know that only around 20% of golfers have a handicap of less than 18? It made me wonder whether the misunderstanding of the fundamental aspect could be the one thing that is holding so many golfers back.

Which part of the body do you think creates the maximum speed of the club head?

Is it:

Shoulders

Arms

Hands

Hips

Legs

Torso

wrists

(Graphics and explanations omitted here)

….So the answer to the question that I posed above is that it is the hands (or wrists) that contribute the most to generating the maximum club head speed. The club is moved through over 180 degrees whilst the arms move through less than 60 degrees - all of the rest of the movement of the head of the golf club is generated by the movement of the hands. Unfortunately the large majority of golfers think that it is with the shoulders and arms. I’ll come back to this point later as even when you get everything else right in your swing this can be a real good swing killer!

Sean Cochran asked:

Golf fitness stretching and corollary golf exercises are an easy way to improve your golf swing. The utilization of golf exercises within a golf fitness program can enhance many aspects of the golf swing and your golf game. The amateur golfer can improve their ability to execute the golf swing, complete a full shoulder turn, generate more clubhead speed, and hit more accurate shots with improved flexibility. The process an amateur golfer can improve their flexibility is through golf stretches.

Before providing information on what are the best stretches for golfer let us define flexibility. Flexibility refers to range of motion. It is defined as the optimal extensibility of all soft tissues in the body (Michael Clark, Director, National Academy of Sports Medicine). The biomechanics of the swing require the golfer to swing the club on the correct plane. In order for the biomechanics of the swing to be executed correctly every muscle, ligament, and tendon in the body must allow for optimal joint range of motion.

Increased flexibility is the benefit of stretching. These benefits occur through the elongation (i.e. stretching) of soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments). Typically certain muscles in your body are in a shortened position (i.e. “tight”), causing restrictions in the golf swing. Golf stretches (i.e. elongating) these muscles alleviates these muscles alleviates these restrictions allowing for the ranges of motion required of the golf swing to develop.

Because the golf swing requires a large range of motion from multiple joints (ankle, hip, thoracic spine, and shoulder), I suggest performing a series of flexibility exercises for the entire body. Many golfers will find “tightness” in the hamstrings, hips, lower, and upper back causing restrictions in their joint range of motions as well as golf swing. This may require additional golf stretches to assist in the restrictions caused by these muscles.

Guidelines to golf stretches are quite simple. A comprehensive series of stretches for golf should be completed a minimum of four times per week. If an individual desires these exercises can be performed daily. In addition to performing golf stretches multiple times per week each exercise should be take each target muscle passively to the point of “tension” and holding the stretch for 30 seconds. Do not attempt to “bounce” or “push” the stretch for this can result in injury. Pay strict attention to technique with each of your stretches. It also recommended to perform a warm-up prior to your golf stretches to get more out of each exercise. The following are the stretches I often recommend to the amateur player; Rotators, 90/90 Hamstrings, Cats Down, Cats Up, Piriformis, Kneeling Hip Flexor, Openers, Standing Calf, and Standing Quadricep.

Remember how golf fitness stretches and other types of golf exercises can improve many aspects of your golf swing. The placement of golf fitness stretches in a golf training program is one step to improvement in your golf swing. Keep in mind what is required from the body in regards to the golf swing, and that one of these requirements is drawing the club through a long range of motion. If your body lacks the flexibility to perform this requirement of the golf swing, the ability to execute and efficient golf swing will be compromised.

Sean Cochran is one of the most recognized golf fitness instructors in the world today. He travels the PGA Tour regularly working with professional golfers, most notable PGA and Masters Champion Phil Mickelson. Achieving Full Golf Swing Success

Filed Under golf swing | Comments Off

golf swing
Dave Nimmo asked:

olf shots with a full golf swing involves strategic thinking. First, ask yourself what you want to do with the shot. As you develop skill, strategic concerns such as the ball flight, right or left turn and high or low trajectory become more and more important.

New golfers spend most of their strategy time finding a target and picking a club simply because the number of ways they can hit a shot is limited. Professional players will take all aspects of the shot into account. Wind, lie, slopes, hazards, pin position, green firmness, individual preferences, and other factors all help the professional player decide on ball flight.

As you develop as a player the answer to the question of what to do with the ball will become a matter of adjusting to the conditions set by the golf course and by yourself. The better golf player you are, the more answers you will find and the more variety your golf shots will have.

Once you’ve determined what you want to do, consider how you will get it done, examining your ability to execute the necessary shot. A good player will be able to produce the best shot for any given situation.

Before you can reach a professional level, the most important answer to the question “How” is simply the technique you need to produce the shot. A straight forward golf shot may necessitate your regular full golf swing. For softer ball flight, perhaps a smoother swing with a longer club could do the trick. It isn’t easy to practice strategic thinking for a full golf swing without playing on a golf course. A driving range or practice area usually looks different from the course. Practicing under game-like conditions will help you transfer what you learn in practice to the golf course.

Here are some Full Golf Swing drills to practice:

On the driving range, select a target for your golf shot, such as a different area on the ground, a sign, or an assembly of balls lying on the fairway. Your goal is to hit the target, but on every shot decide on an area around the target about the size of a green. Play at least 20 shots with different clubs and give yourself a point every time you hit the green area.

To increase your difficulty, make your visualized area of the green smaller. To decrease your difficulty, make your visualized area of the green bigger and use all the clubs in the bag all the way up to the driver. Additionally, focus on the target and let your swing take care of itself. At the end of your practice add up all your points and check your success. This is a great way to keep a score going of your golf practice sessions.

Developing a sound full swing is fundamental to playing golf successfully. The full golf swing has three phases: (1) Backswing, (2) Downswing and (3) Follow through. You can execute a full golf swing with nearly any club in the bag. Strategic thinking for the full swing involves understanding club selection, knowing how to hit a variety of shots and adjusting to the ever changing golf course conditions.

The key to developing your full golf swing and success is strategic practice drills. Vary your distances, change clubs and targets until you master your shots.
