I dont have much practice hitting from the rough because I’m used to hitting on the range. How do I get better at this?
Also, my shot is very consistent from the fairway but very very inconsistent coming from the rough. Do I have to adjust my swing or use a certain club when hitting from there? How do I make sure it goes straight?

Learning to play Golf?
Filed Under golf swing | 12 Comments
I want to learn how to play golf. I’m middleaged. I picked up a club for the first time and started to hit some simulated golf balls (wiffle balls). I had about 20% success of hitting a good shot. The other 80% of the shots I either completely missed the ball , hit the top of the ball (roll) or hit the ground. I never had a lesson.
Maybe my swing is wrong.
Do you think if I had some lessons that I can actually play?
Did anybody else struggle the first timed they tried golf?
If I can hit in the 90’s I would be happy.

I recently video taped my golf swing and found something very interesting?
Filed Under golf swing | 9 Comments
I usually hit the ball long and straight (about 225 yrds), but I found that the club head on my diver is reaching the ball before my hands, creating a reverse C in the shaft. I think my swing plain is too steep also. Can someone tell me how to get my hands in front of the ball at impact?

Hi, I am in my mid 30s and would like to learn golf. I need some advice and feedback?
Filed Under golf swing | 7 Comments
Hi, I am in my mid 30s and is starting to learn golf. I managed to get an instructor at a local driving range and had attended 3 lessons. I had also gone to the driving range on my own to practice about 3-4 times.
So at this stage, how much ‘improvement’ should i have and how ’stable’ should my golf swing be? I am hitting balls very poorly. If i hit them squarely they are pretty straight and at a consistent distance (good thing???). However, I will have like 1 ‘good’ hit after every 10-15 ‘very poor’ hits, like i top the ball or sometimes ‘miss’ the ball completely.
I am starting to have doubts about my own innate talent (or lackof) and also a bit on the instructional ability of the teacher….
Is this the ‘typical’ rate of improvement for any beginner? I will be going back to my instructor this weekend and would of course give the same feedback… just need more additional inputs.

Anyone remember the cartoon where one character peeps through a hole and asks the other: What ya doin? Poopin?
Filed Under golf swing | 1 Comment
I know it’s a silly question - but I’m (specifically) looking for a clip of that cartoon where the character does that. I never watched the cartoon but my b/f and I have an inside joke about it and I think it would crack him up (don’t ask LOL).
Anyone remember which cartoon it was? I think it was on UPS for like one season a few years back - maybe 5 or 6 years ago.
Thanks in advance!

Which golf coach should I choose?
Filed Under golf swing | 8 Comments
Okay, I am a freshman, and this fall I played on our girls golf team. I am not a par golfer, but I did play #1 for varsity the whole year and beat the school record. I shoot on average an 85. I want to choose a coach who will get me to be a par golfer by the end of my high school career. I learn really quickly. So anyways, I have narrowed it down to these to coaches, “Mel” and “Dan”. My personality and Mel’s really click, and he has great software that has some really cool features including showing pros swings and changing them to left-handed, (I’m left-handed). So anyways, Mel gave me a lesson and my swing already looks a ton better. Now moving to Dan, who I’m not quite sure about. He has coached some unbelievable golfers, but he has also coached a girl for 3 years who I played and beat. When I had a lesson, he was very sure of himself, and almost seemed to brag. I felt really intimidated and he basically told me it was his way or the highway. But he is a good coach..
I honestly can’t decide. Both are awesome teachers, and Dan tells me that all of the pros swing like he is going to teach me. Dan also has good software, but it doesn’t show pros swings left-hands. But he also said that I have a bad swing and if he doesn’t coach me then I am not going to be a good golfer. He also tells me that for the first 3 mos. We wont be working with a club… which could be looked at as good or bad. I feel in a way that Dan is trying to force me to go with him, and I felt really uncomfortable. Mel on the other hand was very open and understood that I was still making a decision. I have heard great things about both of them, but are coaches supposed to tell you that you should have started golf earlier and that you have an almost hopeless swing? Thanks for all the help..
yes, I would like to try for a scholarship in golf for college
by the way, both have connections for college. Mel probably has more connections and has already informed me of the tournaments I will need to participate in this spring and summer
lol, no, I am not signing a contract. I’m just trying to find someone who I can stick with through my high school career and will help me to get a (hopefully) division 1 scholarship
I thought so, lol

Where is the best place for a middle age, beginner to take golf lessons near Orchard Park, NY?
Filed Under golf swing | 1 Comment
I am a true beginner. Never held a golf club until last weekend. I want to start out right and not develop bad habits. I know some pros are not patient with true beginners who do not even know how to hold a club.

Is natural golf an effective swing method?
Filed Under golf swing | 2 Comments
I’ve heard mixed reviews on whether Natural Golf by Moe Norman is actually effective. Granted, I’ve never seen a guy on the PGA tour use it, but guys on the PGA tour are a different breed than average golfers. Has anyone used it and been successful/unsuccessful with it?
