I have a set of speakers and on the back of each there is one large hole. Why is it there?

The reason I need to know is that the speakers broke and I am trying to fix them. I took them apart and I was able to fix them but half the nails were stripped while I was taking it apart so I had to break it open. I am making a new box for the speakers and need to know if it needs a hole in the back or not.

      The hole is there to equalize air pressure in the hole is there to equalize air pressure in the box.

      The hole is necessary if they are reasonably good brand of speaker the frequency response.
