When hitting the long irons in golf, do you hit the ball then create the divot, or vice versa?

I am trying to understand my golf swing a little better. I have a real problem with my long irons, I try to pick the ball off the fairway, and I am not really sure how to hit the ball creating a divot, like I see all the really good players do. Please help.

you hit down thru the ball, striking the ball first and driving the club down into the ground, creating a divot.
One of the things I’ve always told beginners, is to hit the small ball(golf ball) before the big ball (the earth).
Unless you are a very powerful player you shouldn’t take much of a divot with a long iron. If you don’t hit your drives further than 220, you shouldn’t hit them at all and leave the 2,3, and 4 in the garage. If this is you, switch to two or three hybrids of various lofts.
Long irons require precision. Miss-hit shots are usually disasters unless you have the power to carry through off-center hits.
The important thing, though, is not to tighten up when hitting long irons. Stay loose and let your swing happen–ball first, then a modest divot.
